Resources for Finding Informational Texts

SIRS Discoverer via Pioneer*
SIRS Discoverer is a database that allows you to search numerous newspapers, magazines, reference materials, and websites.  It also assigns each article a Lexile score.

"In Room for Debate, the Times invites knowledgable outside contributors to discuss news events and other timely issues."  This is a great way to present argumentative writing or begin a current events debate.

This blog is full of lesson plan ideas that utilize an article from The Times.

Center for Urban Education: Resources
Here you will find a list of one-page non-fiction articles that have a question or two at the bottom asking the students to complete a common core task.  The pages are all formatted and ready for printing.

EBSCO via Pioneer*
EBSCO is the database of all databases.  EBSCO gives you access to numerous databases within many content/subject areas.

ReadWorks.org
Short, Lexiled non-fiction passages with follow up questions.  You do need to create a free account with the organization.

Video Copyright Policy
Many teachers wonder about the copyright policy for videos.  Here are the middle school guidelines from Canyons School District.
  • G: okay to show
  • PG: need parental permission
  • PG-13: not okay
  • Non-rated: need to be reviewed
The movie obviously needs to be for educational purposes to be used in the classroom. If it is used for recreational purposes (meaning reward or entertainment), the movie has to be produced by one of the following Hollywood Studios:

  • Walt Disney Pictures
  • Paramount Pictures
  • Warner Bros.
  • Sony Pictures
  • NBC/Universal Pictures
  • DreamWorks Pictures
  • New Line Cinema
  • Lionsgate Films
  • MGM
  • Touchstone Pictures
  • Hollywood Pictures

  • TriStar Pictures
  • Focus Features
  • Miramax
  • Warner Independent Pictures
  • Paramount Classics
  • Paramount Vantage
  • Fine Line Features
  • United Artists
  • Picturehouse
